Diversity · Inclusion · Community · Purpose · Joy

Skills of Life Cafe was developed from a passion to support our local teens and young adults with mild intellectual disabilities by providing a supportive, yet challenging community based vocational training program. Our goal is to foster strength in abilities, improve self-awareness in presence and service, and to support the path to task independence. These enhanced skills can then be bridged to true opportunities in attaining competitive and meaningful employment in the community they live.

Skills of Life Cafe offers a 90 day job training internship program. We have created a curriculum that will place training emphasis on the hard skills of safe handling and use of appliances to make hot and cold beverages, light serving, bussing, and customer interface skills. In addition we will be offering training and support to the “hidden skills” that are known as the soft skills of behavior awareness, time management, organizational skills, working as a team, and how to flow with task rate of speed given the changing of customer flow.

We all want to feel connected and participate in activities that bring us pleasure, and build our self-esteem and abilities. Having a meaningful job gives a feeling of community and personal contribution, while broadening opportunities and purposeful experiences.

The end goal is employment. Skills of Life Cafe can be used on a job resume, and as a recommendation to employ, or onboard to a paid position at our food trailer. Furthermore, Skills of Life Cafe has invested in our community outreach, creating awareness by supporting similar skill set level businesses that could be willing to hire a “graduate” from our vocational training program.
